Dear Jon Snyder’s Blog,

Greg smelled SO bad today. I don’t know which was worse, his post-nap plane breath or the trail of sweat he left in his wake. Luckily, our team’s love of the Lord and fervent passion to serve overcame. We’re all okay.

Plane rides were uncomfortable, but uneventful. I’m pretty sure most of us slept, but I wouldn’t know for sure because I passed out as soon as we boarded. Up until the plane I’m guessing we had eight hours of sleep between the fourteen of us, max.  This lack of sleep may be the reason why Becky’s suitcase is no longer with us. She took it off the plane, but from then on it’s whereabouts remain unknown. While she and a few others went shopping to replace her misplaced stuff, we got to work sorting clothes, inflating mountains of soccer balls, and building benches for the back of the truck we’ll be riding around in this week.

We crammed into the back of the pickup and headed to La Casa de Mi Padre, and I’m not even going to attempt anything clever here, because I’m still reeling from it. I mean that in a good way though, really. We popped enough popcorn to cover the entire country, and watched Bedtime Stories with the kids. Not surprisingly, Adam Sandler is hilarious even in Spanish.  As soon as we got in the facility, I broke out into a smile that has ceased to leave me since.  I don’t think a single one of us left without a hug. And they were good hugs! None of that insincere, pat you on the back stuff, but they squeeze you tight until you know for certain that you’re a part of their family. I’m so amazed that kids from circumstances such as theirs are as intelligent and open as they are.

I think everyone is beginning to feel the anticipation I’ve got running through my veins. We’re completely capable of changes these kids’ lives just with a show of God’s love and compassion. That blows my mind. Your prayers are madly appreciated, because I’m sure satan’s going to come at us in the worst way to knock us off our high. We’ll beat it though, definitly.

God bless and goodnight.
Danielle

We woke up this morning and an amazing breakfast of American and local food was waiting for us. After breakfast we went to church in San Salvador, it was much different than any mass I have ever been to. They had a band with guitars drums and keyboards and they sang several songs. Unfortunately the whole mass was in Spanish, but we had several people that help the mission try to translate. After mass we had a delicious local meal of Wendy’s haha they had all the same food that we had at ours. Next we went to an orphanage called cisna this one was all boys and is publicly run unlike the one we went to last night. It was much more run down and the rainy weather made it look even more dreary. Never the less we had a great time playing soccer with them for several hours gringos (whites) verses Salvadorians. Many of the kids also enjoyed a special all Spanish presentation of “Open Season 2” and snacked on the candy we brought them. It is amazing how happy and loving these kids are even with their situation. As soon as they see you they just want a hug because they never get that and I realize how much I take something so simple as a hug or a pat on the shoulder for granite. We also saw many poor settlements with hundreds of huts made out of sheet metal with tarps or leaves for roofs but still with this poverty these people are much friendlier than Americans, complete strangers often wave or talk to you (I just wish I would’ve learned Spanish haha). -Ryan

PS – Pictures will be posted tomorrow!

Today we woke up, had a delicious American breakfast, and then left around 7:30 to go to Cisna.  Once we got there we went to the cafeteria and started repainting the whole place.  We painted the doors, windows (they were holes in the wall with bars in the middle), and the walls.  We painted the walls white and blue and the windows and doors blue.  It was a lot of hard work but it was a huge improvement. Afterwards we left to go eat lunch, then came back to play with the kids at Cisna. We gave out candy, played soccer, and played many other sports.  It was a lot of fun and they are really good at soccer.  It was great playing with the kids but it was hard to communicate with them.  Luckily we had translators which allowed us to connect with the kids on a whole new level.  When we were done playing sports, we left and went back to the house. Everyone was exhausted.   We all worked hard and had a great experience.  It’s amazing what can be accomplished just by one group of people. -Ben

June 23rd

Today seemed to be so far the hardest day for our team. It started off with another wonderful breakfast. We didn’t think someone as tiny as Rachel could eat as much as Greg, but this morning we found out SHE CAN!

Soon after breakfast we left for CISNA where we spent yet another day painting the cafeteria. We soon agreed that we NEVER wanted to see oil-based paint again. Lunch was so much better than yesterday’s, due to the fact that no one found any chicken claws or organs in their lunch. After lunch we went back to CISNA and performed the puppet show, followed by paper puppet crafts and face painting. All of the kids seemed to enjoy the parachute, and hanging out.

While the kids were enjoying their hot fudge sundaes, we were surprised with hand-made crafts made with love. Unfortunately after three days of bonding we had to say good-bye to CISNA. Tears flowed through all of our eyes as we left. We will truly miss CISNA and all of the wonderful children we met and grew to love during our time there.

After another amazing dinner, we headed out to feed the homeless. It was an eye-opening experience for all of us. On the way home it started pouring. Almost everyone got drenched with the exception of those who were smart enough to put on their ponchos. We are expecting another great day tomorrow. But hopefully it is not as sad.
Much love and we appreciate your prayers,
Angie, Brandi, and Sarah

This morning we ate breakfast and (as usual) left late to go to le casa de mi padre. When we got there, we were assigned to (as usual again) paint the four walls and to put a roof over the room. The paint was yellow and water based so thankfully no one came back looking like Spongebob. Although we had some difficulties with spilling the paint, it turned out to be great. After we ate lunch the girls (And Greg) played with everyone left at the orphanage doing face painting while the guys (minus Greg) played soccer with all of the boys at the orphanage. After that we went to dinner with the kids at Pollo Campero (I think the translation is chicken camp.) were we ate a wonderful meal. After dinner we went into the play room at the restaurant where we were pelted with what felt like an aerial attack of eggs stuffed with confetti. We said our sad goodbyes and left them for the last time. When we got home we had an expected surprise visitor. Jon’s wife Danielle. We talked about our day and what we will do tomorrow. I hope we find as much fun as we did today. In the end the hard work was worth the effort and I think they really liked their new room.

Thursday, June 25th

Today we began our day at Ilovasco a Catholic orphanage for about 30 boys.  The moment we arrived we were greeted with big smiles and warm inviting hugs.  After putting on a puppet show, the boys took their turn swinging at the Scooby Do piñata.  As soon as the candy hit the floor, it was scooped up by quick hands and nimble fingers.  They loved it!  The next event was a treat for us.  On command, the boys lined up and sang their hearts out, singing loudly and proudly.  The lyrics about Jesus, sorrow, and angels tugged on our hearts and reminded us of how fortunate we really are.  We then broke out the balls and played soccer and basketball for the rest of our time.  Before we left, the coordinator presented a gift to Jon… our fearless leader.  It was beautiful vase which will look great in his new home in El Salvador.

After lunch at Burger King, we went to San Martin an orphanage for individuals with disabilities.  The people there ranged from 7 to 47.  As you can imagine, it was difficult, but everyone was happy and thrilled that we had come to spend time with them.  We performed the puppet show, offered up two piñatas, and did a craft.  We also had a tour of the facilities.

It is hard to explain all the emotions that we have all felt over the past several days.  There have been moments of pure laughter and moments of true sadness where all we can do to keep our composer is to turn our head and hold back the tears.  Each of us is on our own journey trying to serve God and live our lives more like Christ… thankfully we have each other to learn from and lean on.

A few nights ago, I was recapping my day in an email to my wife.  It was our last day at Cisna and the night we fed the homeless.  I thought I might share some of what I tried to express.

Today…
Today I saw my son Drew cry when he had to say goodbye to new friends he made at Cisna.  One 12 year old boy gave him a hug and said he would miss him… He wanted to know when we might come back.

Today I gave my Penguin hat away to a boy that touched my heart… he was one of the older/quite ones that was polite and was truly thankful for us coming and spending time with them… we could not communicate… he would say something in Spanish and I would say “no comprehendo”… but the look in his eyes said everything… he was thankful for the attention… he was thankful someone cared about him… He said goodbye to me at least three times.

Today I saw my son Ben hand food to the homeless.  Sixteen of the 100 people we served were children living on the streets.  And one was a little girl Maddy’s age… She was with another little boy… maybe it was her brother… maybe it was her protector… maybe it was her hero… He made sure she made it safely across the street back to their hiding place.
Today I cried… we all cried…
Today I was blessed… blessed through the act of giving… blessed through the eyes of orphan boys… blessed through my own children’s actions, through their desire to love and give freely, through them wanting to help more

Today I was closer to God
Dave

June 26th
Unlike all the other days, today was relaxing and we didn’t have to work. We started off the day with donuts. And soon after breakfast we left for the beach. However, we made a surprise stop on the way. Our surprise was both enjoyable and exciting. We got to go “zip-lining”. Those who were afraid of heights had to face their fear by climbing up several ladders which led to small platforms that we began zip-lining from.

After everyone was finished with the zip-lining we finally headed to the beach. The beach house we spent the day at had a pool and an amazing ocean view. During the day we went swimming in both the ocean and the pool. It was fun just hanging out with everyone and relaxing.

After we ate another amazing dinner we finished the night with a bonfire and devotions. We think everyone really enjoyed hearing what the others were thinking about the week. And everyone is sad that the week passed by so fast but also excited to return home to their families and friends (except for Angie and Rachel who wish they could live in El Salvador).

Thank you for all your support and prayers throughout the week,
Angie and Rachel

  3. [...] June 19, 2009 · Leave a Comment Early tomorrow morning a group of 8 teenagers along with me (Greg) and 5 other adult leaders will be heading to El Salvador.  This is the first time Discovery Christian Church is sending a group of teens to work with the orphans in this poverty stricken third world country.  Last night we spent a couple hours packing up many of the items that were donated so we can deliver them to the orphans.  I am extremely pumped up about this opportunity and the entire team is excited.  I know this trip will be a life-changing experience not only for the teens, but also for the adults that are going.  Please be praying specifically for the following for our team: 1. Safety- we will be travelling a great distance to a foreign country (I’m glad that Jon Snyder will again be leading this trip as his experience is invaluable).  2. Changed Lives- pray that the students and leaders lives will be changed as well as the kids and adults they come in contact with in El Salvador.  3.  Strength- I know that the group will be working very hard from the time we wake up every morning until the time we go to bed at night.  Pray that we have the strength and stamina to make it through the week. You can follow the progress of our week via this blog. [...]

Hey there Discovery team! Jon…I appreciate the email to let us know that you made it down there safely…and in answer your question about “hotness” being a word, I sure hope so since I used it my valentines day card this year.

This is officially the first entry in Mr. Mom Part 2…also known as “Mr. Mom – Revenge of the Fallen”…not sure what that means, but if it works for Transformers it can work for me.

Day 1 went well. After saying goodbye to the crew at the airport, I started heading back home around 5am. I think my sleep deprevation this week caused a lapse in judgement and I headed to North Park for a run. Despite it raining (more like downpouring and lightning) most of the way there, it had stopped by the time I got to the park. Turns out my supper-doppler-viper-radar instincts were about as accurate as Julie Bologna on Channel 11….exactly half way into my run (2.5 miles from the car) the downpour began again. Oh well.

The weather for the rest of the morning was questionable, so after watching several mind-numbing episodes of Dora and SpongeBob SquarePants at my parents house, I decided to take the kids to the Children’s Museum. Side note – Adam made the intuitive observation that “Dora is slow.” I agree. He went on to say “why doesn’t she talk AND drive at the same time?”…very good point.

After the museum we enjoyed a nice little family nap time…including me. Then I decided that everyone should have a say in what was for dinner. After a quick democratic vote, we settled on McDonalds (yay democracy!). We ate at the school playground and hung out there for the rest of the evening.

    Day 1 Injury Count:
Adam – three: (1) Head slammed in door (by Abby), (2)elastic bead neclace pulled back and snapped into chin causing small laceration, (3)cut across neck by Abby’s fingernails
Abby – one: Hand slammed in door…coincidently happened approximately 30s after the crying stopped from her slamming Adams head in door.

Well it’s time for me to get some sleep.

wow. not sure what to say. sounds like your day still went a little better than mine. lost luggage. ouch. too bad while packing at home i had the bright idea to bring two of everything for each day. having nothing but lots of toiletries, NOT including my hairdryer jon edwin and i headed for a trip to eber pies. not sure how you spell that correctly but it always sounds like a dessert i would not want to eat. got some clothes thanks to mastercard and we headed back. so once that was over the rest of the night was great. i made a new friend and saw an old one at la casa. i can’t wait to go to cisna. thanks again jake for doing this for me. i love you and i love the kids. kylie is abbys twin so it is nice to be playing with her. i think this trip is going to be great. well, kurt finally woke his rear up to let me out for a run so i am outta here. off to the park. have fun and happy father’s day :) oh yeah, and dad if yfou ever get to reading this, happy father’s day too. i love you.

Fathers Day is off to a great start! Adam was really cute when he woke up and told me Happy Fathers Day right away. While he was making me coffee I decided to get my shower in…only to be interrupted half way through by Adam coming in. “Dad?”…”yes Adam?”….”Ummm, something really weird happened. When I was making the coffee it all spilled.” Hmmmm…weird isn’t the exactly the word that comes to mind. I guess it’s all about the effort though, right? He has such a big heart! Well, speaking of presents Abby just came over and let me know that she pooped. Talk to you later. Have a great day!

Glad to hear that it’s going so well Beck! Yesterday was gorgeous here…spent almost all day at my mom’s house. I did a little experiment in what happens if you don’t give Abby a nap. I found out she falls asleep in the car on the way home. The only problem is that was too early to fall asleep for the night, so I did another experiment called “wake up sweetie”. She woke up, but wasn’t “sweetie” at all. The next 30 minutes or so were pure torture. I will NEVER do that experiment again.

Adam just told me that I’m a good singer in Abby’s room last night. I think we should get an appointment to have his hearing checked.

Thanks for the encouragement on trying new recipes. We had a delightful dinner last night. I tried this great little recipe. It called for 2 bags of microwave popcorn, 1 cup shredded cheese, a dash of salt, and spray on butter. We had side dishes of gummy worms and goldfish while watching WALL-E out on the deck.

Well…time to get our day underway here. Can’t wait to hear more from you!!!

P.S. I talked to your mom yesterday and we’re heading over there tomorrow to swim.

Good morning campers! Thanks for the pointers Beck. We had a pretty darn good day here yesterday. Here are the sportscenter highlights.

Dropped off some books and movies at the library on the way to the pool. It appears that the shadey guy from our neighborhood has expanded his territory. I spotted him sitting against a tree near the edge of the library parking lot. Weird.

Hung out at the North Park pool for about 3 hrs. I thought it would like a MOPS session, but there were a surprising number of dads there too. Don’t these guys have jobs? I’m glad I packed snacks because about every 15 minutes Abby wanted “sum-ping to eat”.

We came home and gave Abby a nap while Adam and I repaired the cracks in the drive way. “OK Adam, its very important not to step in the goo while it is drying.” Message given. Message not received. Apparantly while attempting to play jump rope with the line of goo, Adam landed on it. We now have a nice black footprint in the driveway.

Since it was so nice last night, I thought I’d see if any of the city parks were doing a movie in the park. We were excited to find that Kung Fu Panda was playing at a park in East Liberty. The city negleted to mention that “parking lots” must now qualify as “parks”. So we laid out the blanket in parking lot and enjoyed Kung Fu Panda as the city buses and traffic sped by about 20 feet away.

Adam has been sleeping in our bed every night. I thought that a king size bed would give us plenty of room….unfortunately 80% of the bed is going unused. There is me on one side of the bed and Adam exactly zero millimeters away. He was kicking so much last night I thought he had brought an invisible bicycle to bed. And when he woke up this morning apparantly his invisible bicycle was entered into the invisible x games. There was no more sleeping with all of his flopping and flipping around.

I’m so glad to hear how the trip is going…and we love the pictures. Abby says “that’s MY MOMMY!”

Don’t worry about the mastercard bill…I just hope they don’t put you on hold after seeing eradic spending in central america.

We’re praying for you! Love you so much!

We are so glad you arrived safely ….you didn’t want those clothes anyway!!!Jake and the kids were here today and just left a short while ago. We had a great time today..swimming,playing, bike riding, and catching lighning bugs and frogs. Of course eating was done all day too. We will see
jake on Thursday night at the game. we are seeing him at the stadium and they are coming to stay overnight. It will be fun to have Abby on Friday and Adam seems to be looking forward to his camping trip. We will be praying for all of you this week. What a blessing and privelege for you to be there. Love mom

  47. Dear Rachel and Sarah, I know this trip will be a rewarding one and you will be so enriched by it. I will pray for your safety. Can’t wait to hear all about your experience. Love you both, Aunt Jill

Hi Beck…thought I would check in and let you know we chalked up another great day here. The weather was absolutely perfect (84 deg and sunny!) and we headed out to your moms for the day. I even got a run in (around “the loop” at your parents) while Beth watched Abby and Adam played with the boys. I prayed for you guys almost the whole run…except for the huge double hill at the end…I prayed for myself on that part. I think the highlight of my day was catching lightning bugs with the kids at your parents. Adam was keeping count of every one he caught and Abby was really cute running around…even caught a couple all by herself.

We sure miss you, but know that you are having another great experience down there. Keep on letting that light shine!!!!

    Love ya!

    Dear Jon,
Danielle is on the plane and on her way to you! She is excited to get there and to see you! The kids are having a good time – I came home from my Bible study and found them in the hammock with Papa. Elise is taking Tori shoe shopping and then to her house to play and I’m planning on spoiling Ian (after his nap, of course). We’re praying that all goes well as you continue the ministry with the team and then turn to Snyder adventures for the rest of the time.

    Much love,
    Mama Frech

    hello ya’ll :)
since i woke up at four and could not fall back asleep thanks to the special ingredients they put in the water here just for tourists… i decided to send you a little hello! thanks mom for reading and writing to me! hope you have fun with abby on friday. get her to paint some rocks for me! yesterday was a fun bonding day with the group. we painted at la casa.. as fast as you possibly can while engaging in deep conversation .. thank you victoria:) then i got a chance to hit a volleyball around with the older boys, which of course was good for a few laughs . after lunch some of us went to the park with the boys from la casa and i got to engage in an extremely tiring game of basketball, which actually turned out pretty good. we won and i was not as rusty as i remember! at night we had fun taking the kids from la casa to the chicken joint where i was happy to find that victoria also picks her chicken apart and her plate looks as gross as mine by the end of the meal! yippee i am not the only one! we were later stalked by the fast food mascot for what felt like an eternity, and got some memorable photographs with the freaky bird. so. today is thursday. kinda sad. we have a busy day today so i am hoping that instead of being insanely tired around one pm that i can make it a little longer! we have been having such a great time together as a team. i even convinced the girls to let me play make up with them. i hope that you got a chance to see transformers, there are billboards advertising it down here and i always think of adam when i see it! i love you adam and abby and you are very lucky to have such a special daddy who loves you so much! be good and have fun camping! lets put a limit on those marshmallows though okay, whaddya yah say? (i meant you jake :) )
    see you soon. love mommy

Wow Beck…glad to hear about all the fun…sad to hear about the eh-hummm problems with the water. Let’s hope that doesn’t make for a loonnnggg plane ride home!

It was another fun filled day here yesterday. Beautiful weather and of course we started with a few hours at the pool. We had a pretty nice routine of swim 15min, snack 15 minutes, repeat….

Then Adam and I played some hockey in the driveway while we waited anxiously for Abby to wake from her nap so we could go see Transformers.

We were able to still catch the matinee price (still $6.50!) and I splurged on a kids snack pack for Adam’s highly nutricious dinner! The movie was very entertaining, but at 2-1/2 hours probably just a little too long for Adam to sit still. We also had to leave to use the potty twice during the movie (with 30min left and then again with 10min left).

My dad was at the Pirates game, so Abby and grandma had a girls night…including happy meals and picking out new pink flip flops at toys r us.

Abby was really cute last night when I was drying her hair she found a picture of Kylie on the floor. She picked it up and said “that’s my fwend!”…then she hugged the picture and said “come here little buddy.”

Adam and I “stayed up late” and made ice cream sundaes….correction….super sundaes! We had all the toppings out and Adam got to decorate his own. I guess you know its too much when he can’t finish his sundae because it is “getting too boring to eat all that”. I think I’ll try and take your advice about limiting the marshmallows when we go camping.

Well….this might be the last chance I get to write before we see you Saturday night! Enjoy your last couple days with the kids and please don’t try to stash away any in your luggage…(especially with your track record of keeping track of your suitcase)!!

…Abby just ran into the room saying “that’s mommys song!!!” We found HSM2 at the library yesterday and “hey batter batter swing…i dont dance” is on.

Love you! See you Saturday night!!!

Victoria…I’m glad to hear that my undying love (and offer of unlimited breadsticks) has won you over. Destiny has paired us together like Chicken Alfredo is paired with a nice Chardonnay (Olive Garden recommends Chateau Ste Michelle). When you get back I’d like to take you out for a nice meal at Olive Garden. I get a reasonable employee discount plus I can earn fuel perks by using gift cards from Giant Eagle. I await your return my love! Zack…Zack…I’m Vicci maniac! XOXOXO.

      Hi Nickle -

Thanks for all of your messages. Aside from you and Jack I have been getting my blog-fills from Jake’s messages to “Rebecca-Sue”. It’s been a super great trip here this time. I have really good stories for you too. Remember that one day we were literally bent over with laughter in your kitchen – you know and we were totally ignoring your kids? Plenty of those types of stories about to unfold in a few days for you. Hope all is well with you. Thanks again for writing to me! The little girl in the photo is Ana Julia – you know the orphan I refer to as my “daughter”? She got bigger and even more beautiful. I have lots of good pix to show you guys. Have a good day!
      Love, Toria

    Hi Jon and Danielle,

Just an update – the kids are fine. We had fun today with Elise and her kids. We also went to the grocery store. We broke out the tiny kids pool and all the kids crowded in – they had a good time. I think I’m going to buy a bigger one tomorrow. Hope all is well with you and you got lots done today. Tori says “I miss you!” Ian asks for you both.

    Love,
    Mom

Good morning Discovery Team. I know today will hold many blessings for you as well as some sadness as you prepare to leave your newly found friends in El Salvador. Just remember what “the power of caring” means to the people whose lives you touched and be thankful for this great experience. Thanks to all who shared each day. It was the highlight of my day and I’ll miss it. May God Bless each of you for this outpouring of love to those less fortunate. Praying for you today and also for a safe trip home tomorrow.

it is weird how you think there is no possible way you could get attached or bond with the kids of yet another orphange, but everywhere we go the kids are absolutely amazing and wonderful to be with. what amazes me is how much everyone is smiling the entire time we are there. them and us!!! this is where i truly and stronly believe that us being here is of the utmost importance and i believe it makes God smile just as much! to me it just reiterates the importance of spending genuine time with people whether it be here or at home with our families and friends. what we do when we are together..does it really matter? just showing that you are willing to give up a small portion of your time to have fun and spend time with others and be truly joyful about it IS what matters. and doing it in Christ just makes it all the more important. Thank you Ackermanns, Snyders and team for making this a great experience for the kids and for the team. love you all!
